Sunday I took the picasso out for a run after getting it serviced.  We decided to do some inshore fishing due to the fact that the rooster fishing had been pretty good.  Since we got a late jump on the morning I think with the tide changes we just missed the prime hours.  After 1 hour of trolling and only having my outriggers popped once, i decided to troll around some shrimp boats I saw fishing by the port.  Good decision because the Jacks were averaging 15 pounds and biting good.  We took 3 home and a nice size Spanish Mack.  All were caught on 12 lb spinning reels.  I have never had a rod bent over so much until now.  Great fun.

15 to 20 lb Jack Crevalle behind shrimp boats are almost certain!

Well the fishing was pretty good as a summary of our three day group traveling all the way from Africa.  On our first day April 8th we had just a half day of fishing due to mechanical issues.  However, we did raise a few fish and release one sail and had a dorado to take home for our short time.  April 9th we resolved the issues from the previous day and made up for our loss with 10 for 14 sails, 1 for 2 dorado, and 0 for 2 Blue Marlin.  Lots of Blues out there!  Anything from 200 lbs to estimated 450 lbers were being released by the half dozen each day.  April 10th, we had a terrible day in regards to the mates struggling with the hook ups.  We had just as many bites as the 2nd day but missed several hits.  We released 3 and probably had around 10 to 11 solid bites.  Sadly we had another Blue Marlin come into our spread and he simply cleaned us out, again!  There are many boats out there releasing Blues and several sails.  Fun time to be in Guatemala as our group from Botswana Africa found out.  Thank you two again for choosing Blue Bayou Sport Fishing of Guatemala.  We will be in Africa soon for our safari.

See ya soon,

Capt Starrs

Hola,

We are gearing up for a three day stretch this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for fishing.  The bite is pretty good right now as we recover from some down time this past week.  Since I was gone on vacation, word on the dock is that most boats released 8 sails on the weekend and caught at least 6, 15 plus pound Dorado as well.  The dorado bite will pick up as well as big blue marlin off shore going forward.  I will be personally stepping down from the tower this week and teaching a group from Africa how to pitch a fly to sails.  We will follow up with the results by the weekend for sure.  Tight lines.

Hello Anglers,

As I always tell my clients make sure you consult a moon phase calendar for this region before planning any fishing trip, as it can prove a great week vs a bad week of fishing.  This time of year in Guatemala is known as Samana Santa or holy week.  The country will shut down for a week to celebrate easter.  Always at the end of March on the week of the last full moon.  So this means the bite will most likely be slow, yet the shore fishing is exceptional.  I have groups circling the second week of April and I couldn't agree more.  I hope to you see soon.

Use this sight for free moon phase guides and try and plan your trip at least a week before or after to get the best bite for bill fish.

Summary of Species biting this time of year off shore:

Blue & Black Marlin, Sail Fish and Big Dorado, some yellow fin, and lots of humpback whale watching.

As expected the Marlin bite is heating up just 20 miles off shore right now.  Many captains like December for a good mix of both marlin and sails, but March to early June for me is my greatest combo success rate for both sails and Marlin.  Black and Blue Marlin between 200 to 500 lbs have shown up in just about every ones spread while trolling for sails in the past weeks.  A few lucky fly fishermen have even one release to brag about.  Captaining on my boat I was able this past Sunday to release just 6 sails and 1 marlin in the 200 to 250 lb range.   Also we brought home 1 dorado in the 25 lb range.  Dorado have be absent this dry season, and I will be happy to get back into them when late June comes around (rainy months).  Great fun on a small fly reel and tackle.  Let us know if you made it out and how you did if you were in Guatemala.  Also give us a shout if you're interested in coming down for the Marlin bite as the rainy months approach.  Lodging rates are much cheaper, and the action is just as good.

Tight Lines,

Capt Starrs
