Our Catch

Your groups can expect to participate in the bait and switch practices of catching bill fish here in Guate. In the prime season expect to see 20 to 50 sails raised, and at least 15 to 20 sail fish released on an average day. The Pacific indo Sail Fish is known to weigh from 90 lbs to 130 lbs depending on time of year, and the age of the fish. The pacific sailfish are very aggressive when hitting the baits or FLY as well as teasers, which makes this species perfect for lite tackle and fly fishermen. Make sure to have the camera ready! No one fish is the same and each one makes for a great show while reeling in.

With the Blue Bayou Fleet double and triple hook ups are also common with sail fish in Guatemala, and no day is slow when Mahi Mahi (Dolphin Fish) are on the hunt. Big Mahi Mahi, 25 – 35 lbs are plentiful in the Pacific Ocean of Guatemala. This makes for an exciting turn of events.

Fishing is outstanding all year round! 8 months of the year we have the best sail fish bite in the world based on releases.  While the remaining months turn into Blue & Black Marlin heaven off shore, as well as a great yellow fin tuna bite. Ask us what is biting and we will give you an accurate report.  In shore fishing in Guatemala is also top notch.  When the tide is up, the rooster fishing is second to none.  The 2010 lodge record was a 52 lb rooster which still stands.

Marlin bite all year round as well as Sails in Guatemala, but we do have scheduled concentrations.   Usually while the seasonal rains come in, you can expect greater Marlin numbers as the water cools to the low 82 degree range, and bait pushes in. In Guatemala the Blue and Black Marlin can range inbetween 300 to 800 pounds, with 300 lbers being the most common.  By the way our November to December time frame offers stripe marlin on a regular basis mixed in with blues and blacks.  All are great for the fly! But make sure to pile on the backing for their incredible runs. In recent years it has been common for the best captains to raise 4 or more marlin in a single day to two day stretch. Marlin can be caught year round in Guatemala but the largest concentrations seem to occur in late spring through December. This time is also great for Dorado, Yellow Fin Tuna, and Atlantic Tarpon.  No matter what you should consider the moon phases for bill fish activity, but this is never 100% accurate based on our experience.
